Track wheel offsets

I'm sizing up track wheels for the GR86, considering 17x9 or 18x9 setups. If +45 with a 15mm spacer works as +30, would it make sense to choose +30 directly? Wondering how 17-inch wheels compare to 18s for track use.

Choosing a +30 wheel makes sense., it uses less hardware and simpler.

About 17" or 18" for track use, both can be great for track. however, 17" are lighter and can be cheaper so most drivers prefer this.

Choosing +30 directly does seem more straightforward. The lighter and cost-friendly 17" wheels are a tempting option. Might be worth leaning that way for track efficiency.

17x9 +30 wheels are an excellent option for track use, they're lighter, more affordable, and more efficient. You'll save weight, plus the tires are easier to come by. If you're working with a spacer that has a +45 offset, going with +30 is a simpler choice. While 18x9 might provide better grip, 17x9 is probably the way to go for efficiency

If at all possible, use a native +30 because it is cleaner, requires less hardware, and eliminates spacer stress. In terms of size, 17x9 tires are lighter, less expensive, and have better compliance, 18x9 tires clear large brakes and offer more tire options, but they are heavier and more aggressive. Unless you're chasing particular tire sizes or using large brakes, 17s make a lot of sense for the majortiy of GR86 track setups

@GripAndSlide Appreciate you spelling that out so clearly about the 17x9 +30. Good to know tires are easier to get too which is a nice bonus for track days.

@TunedToy86 That makes much sense about sticking with a native +30 to avoid headaches. It seems like 17s are the smart money for my kind of track use unless I get into big brakes later.

I went with 17x9 +30 on my previous FR-S track setup, lighter, more affordable tires, and no spacers to deal with. I've never looked back on that choice. Plus, it was way easier on my budget

When I was getting my old Miata ready for autocross, I faced a similar choice,go for 17s or 18s, and should I use spacers or skip them? I ultimately decided on a nice set of 17x9 +30s without any spacers. They were lighter, I found cheaper tires, and it simplified everything. I never looked back, my lap times improved, and my bank account was grateful.

Great to hear from both of you with similar experiences on your FR-S and Miata. All the feedback has helped lock in my decision. I'm going with the 17x9 +30 setup for the track.
